Across Uganda and beyond, the world has been seeing a powerful shift in the rise of youth voices. Several young people are no longer content with being passive receipts of information and are eager to be at the forefront of change, especially when it comes to issues that impact their communities and well-being.
When one looks at Uganda, a country whose population is now predominately having more young people than old. Their voice and impact towards change can not be ignored, especially when it comes to issues impacting their well-being and mental health, coupled with the growing access to various information through the internet and other online platforms which have given them courage to speak up.
On a global scale, many young people experience mental health challenges, and if we do not put effort in empowering our youth in various aspects, we face a dark future ahead. A report from the World Health Organization (WHO) states that one in seven 10–19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among those aged 15-29.
In Uganda, for example, an UpLink report indicates a high burden of child and adolescent mental health disorders, with 21% of secondary school adolescents experiencing depression and 26.6% anxiety. In the U.S. alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that youth are experiencing a mental health crisis, with a high percentage of students reporting various mental health concerns.
For too long, conversations around mental health have been confined to secret places with hushed tones or professional settings. But thanks to the increasing courage and advocacy of young people across the globe, these vital discussions are becoming a norm.
This is more than just a trend; it's a movement towards stronger, more resilient communities. When we empower young people to lead mental health conversations, we build better communities, and that comes with a multitude of benefits.
The benefits of empowering young people to lead mental health conversations
1. It combats stigma and builds new bridges
Despite the efforts in mental health advocacy, the bitter reality is that mental health stigma remains as a significant barrier more so for the youth who are afraid to come out due to fear of being judged or misunderstood. However, when youth step up to share their experiences, offer support, and educate their peers, this helps to fight stigma drastically.
Sharing their personal stories and taking part in the advocacy encourages others to raise their voices too since by doing so it authentically resonates with others deeply making it easier for them to seek the help they need. Imagine a young person in a secondary school in Kampala openly discussing anxiety with their friends, this creates an environment where mental health is seen as a legitimate concern, not a taboo.
2. It enables building tailored solutions for youth
Who better understands the unique pressures and challenges faced by young people today than young people themselves? From academic stress and social media pressures to navigating relationships and future uncertainties, the youth perspective is invaluable.
When they lead these conversations, they can identify the most relevant issues, propose innovative solutions, and develop support systems that truly resonate with their peers. This ensures that mental health initiatives are not just theoretically sound, but practically effective and culturally sensitive.
3. It fosters empathy and peer support
Youth become powerful agents of empathy and kindness when they are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to discuss mental health openly. By doing this, it enables them to recognize signs of distress in their peers and friends, allowing them to offer a listening ear and direct them to appropriate resources and places of help.
In the long run, this creates a robust network of peer support, ensuring that no young person feels alone in their struggles, since access to professional mental health services in our communities can sometimes be limited. This is where peer-to-peer support becomes incredibly vital.
4. Future leaders and advocates are born
Empowering young people to lead mental health conversations acts as an investment in their leadership skills, future proofing their involvement in the future. By doing so, it helps develop their critical thinking, communication, empathy, and organizational abilities. These are not just skills for mental health advocacy; they are life skills that will serve them well in all aspects of their lives.
By nurturing a generation of compassionate and informed leaders, we ensure a continuous legacy that will champion well-being, and skills transfer for years to come.
What can we do to improve on and empower more young people in mental health conversations and spaces?

Now that we fully understand the impact of empowering young people, here are a few steps that we can take to continue fostering this vital movement:
1. Providing safe spaces: Creating environments, both online and offline, where young people feel comfortable and secure sharing their thoughts and feelings about mental health without fear of judgment are crucial in empowering generations of youth.
2. Offering education and training: Equipping young people with accurate information about mental health, coping strategies, and how to identify and support peers in distress is very important. This can be through workshops, school programs, or community initiatives.
3. Amplifying youth voices: Actively listen to and amplify the perspectives of young people. Give them platforms to share their stories, organize events, and contribute to policy discussions.
4. Supporting youth-led initiatives: Providing resources and mentorship to youth who are passionate about developing their own mental health programs, projects and campaigns can not be under-estimated.
The future of our communities’ hinges on the well-being of our young people.
